Unwanted Shelter Cat and Autistic Girl Form a Special Bond That Changes Both Their Lives

Cats are known for being wonderful therapy animals, especially for children with autism. Their presence can help kids build important social skills like sharing and empathy while also providing comfort, friendship, and emotional support.

Simple things cats do, like kneading with their paws or purring, can create a calming effect. These behaviors may help reduce anxiety, support emotional balance, and provide gentle sensory experiences that many autistic children enjoy.

Growing up with cats can also teach children about friendship, trust, and building connections with others.

A young mom experienced this special bond firsthand when she adopted a shelter cat for her autistic daughter, Jade.

Jade’s Life Before Trubs Came Along

All Jade’s mom wanted was for her daughter to have a more normal and happy childhood. She never expected that a shelter cat no one else wanted would become the one thing that helped her so much.

Jade was a sweet and playful girl, but autism made some parts of everyday life difficult, especially when it came to connecting with other children.

She found it hard to know how to interact with kids, became upset when things didn’t go the way she expected, and often struggled with different challenges throughout the day.

Bedtime was especially challenging for Jade. Her mom shared:

“When it was time for bed, all of her senses would kick into overdrive and it was a nightmare. Jade was very sensitive to light. Hot or cold would set her off, and very loud sounds. She’d get overstimulated, and she wouldn’t know how to calm herself down. She’d cover her ears, she’d rock back and forth, and she’d start crying, screaming, kicking her feet. It was awful every night.”

It became a nightly challenge that was difficult for both Jade and her family. They were all hoping to find something that could help.

Meeting Trubs

One day, Jade’s parents accidentally mixed up their keys, leaving Jade and her mom locked outside their home.

Instead of spending hours sitting on the front porch, Jade’s mom asked her what she wanted to do. Without hesitation, Jade excitedly said, “I want to go pet the kitties, please!”

So, they went to a local shelter. As soon as they arrived, Jade noticed a strange lump under a blanket. She walked over, pulled the blanket away, and smiled.

The “lump” wasn’t a blanket at all — it was a cat!

Jade and her mom learned that the cat, named Double Trouble, had been living at the shelter for five years.

He was in poor health, very skinny, had a viral disease, no teeth, and needed IV fluids. He was also very shy and withdrawn, which made it harder for him to find a home.

Double Trouble looked so sad and tired, almost as if he had given up and was just waiting for his life to end.

A cat who had kept his distance from people for years suddenly found a new friend in Jade.

The little girl was fascinated by him. She started talking to him, gently petting him, and even asking him questions.

When Jade stood up and walked away, Double Trouble followed her. So, she sat back down, and he climbed into her lap and started purring.

At that moment, it felt like everything at the shelter stopped. Jade’s mother said:

“The director was shocked and started to cry. She said he had never been social to anyone before.”

Everyone could see the special connection between Jade and Double Trouble. So, when Jade looked at her mom and asked if they could bring the cat home, she couldn’t say no.

How Jade and Trubs Saved Each Other

Once they brought him home, the family gave the cat a new name: Trubs.

That first night, Jade had the same bedtime struggles she usually did. Her mom tried her best to help her relax, but nothing seemed to work.

Then she noticed Trubs walking into the room, almost like he had a special job to do. He jumped onto Jade’s bed and started kneading his paws on her chest, which immediately helped calm her.

Jade smiled and soon fell asleep peacefully. For her mom, it felt like a true miracle.

From that night on, Jade and Trubs created their own special bedtime routine. He would wait for her in her room and stay beside her until they both fell asleep.

But Trubs helped Jade in more ways than just bedtime. Having him around gave her more confidence, helped her social skills, and made a positive difference in how she did at school and how willing she was to try new things.

Because of the bond they shared, Jade became a happier, more confident, and more involved child. Trubs truly changed her life.

Trubs also went through an amazing transformation. His health improved so much that he no longer needed daily medicine or weekly IV fluids.

He was no longer the sick and withdrawn cat from the shelter. Instead, he became a healthy, playful, and loving companion.

Jade and Trubs truly changed each other’s lives in the best way possible. As Jade’s mom lovingly shared:

“Adopting this little cat that no one wanted has been the best decision that we’ve ever made.”

After all those years of challenges, they finally reached a moment of peace and happiness. As a parent, what more could Jade’s mom have hoped for?
