Casper the Maine Coon Proves Cats Can Be Adventurers Too

People often have strong opinions about whether cats or dogs make better companions, and they’re usually ready to defend their choice.

A common argument from dog lovers is that dogs are better adventure buddies because they can join their owners on all kinds of outdoor trips.

But Casper, today’s feline star, might just prove them wrong! Meet Casper the Friendly Cat — an adventurous Maine Coon who loves going on hiking adventures with his amazing owner, Juliet.

Juliet adopted Casper, a beautiful Maine Coon, after his previous family needed to find him a new home because they were moving and couldn’t take him with them.

From the very first meeting, Juliet felt a special connection with him. They both shared a love for exploring, a curious nature, and a passion for spending time outdoors, making them the perfect adventure team.

Casper, just like any true gentle giant, turned out to be the perfect hiking companion, bringing so much happiness to Juliet.

As she shared in an interview:

“I like how much attention he pays to the details of the world when we’re hiking. He looks at things so closely, wants to smell and understand everything.”

She also mentioned how people often get into the habit of going through the motions without really taking in their surroundings. But Casper, full of curiosity and wonder, is the complete opposite. Juliet explained:

“He makes me slow down and notice everything more, from autumn leaves to crickets in the grass, and all the birds in the trees.” 

Watching Casper enjoy their adventures brings Juliet so much happiness. She loves seeing him discover new places and experience things he had never seen before, especially since he spent most of his younger years living indoors.

Through their hiking adventures, Juliet continues to discover new things about her fluffy feline companion.

These outdoor trips are not only a great way for them to strengthen their bond, but they also help Juliet understand Casper better — learning what he loves, what makes him happy, and what he prefers to avoid.

“For example, he seems more comfortable in places like heathland or woodland where there’s lots of shelter and I guess it feels a bit more enclosed and safe. Unlike a dog, he doesn’t usually want to be in an empty open space like a field. He also loves craggy places where he can jump around on the rocks.” 

She also shared a funny story from one of their recent adventures. Casper discovered a small cave and immediately decided he had to explore it.

Of course, Juliet had no choice but to follow her little explorer. She crawled inside the cave with him, proving once again what a dedicated cat mom she is!

It’s important to note that Casper is always on a leash when exploring the great outdoors with his human. Juliet was fortunate in this department since he was already partially accustomed to both a harness and a leash. As she shared:

“When we adopted him we began by getting him to wear his new harness in the house to make sure he was comfortable with the feeling. We gave him treats each time he was wearing it so he had the positive association. Now, we have a particular type of treat that he really likes, and he only gets this when wearing the harness.”  

Juliet also explained that Casper always uses an extendable leash, giving him plenty of space to explore while still staying safe during their outdoor adventures.

Start slowly by allowing your cat to get comfortable wearing a leash and harness inside the house before heading outside. It can also help to save a special treat only for leash time, so your cat starts to see it as a fun and rewarding experience.

Using an extendable leash can give your cat more freedom to explore while still keeping them safe.

Just remember, walking a cat is very different from walking a dog. Cats have their own personalities, habits, and comfort levels, so every adventure will be a little different.
