Meet Casper, the Amazing Maine Coon Who Prefers Climbing Mountains Over Couch Naps

We all know about the long-running debate between dog lovers and cat lovers. Both sides have their own reasons for why they prefer one over the other.

A common argument from dog lovers is that dogs make better adventure buddies because they can join their owners on outdoor trips.

Juliet adopted Casper, a beautiful Maine Coon, from a family who had to find him a new home because they were moving and couldn’t take him with them.

From the very first meeting, Juliet felt a special connection with him. They both shared a love for exploring, adventure, and spending time outdoors, making them the perfect pair.

Casper, like many gentle giants, quickly became the perfect hiking buddy for Juliet. Having him by her side made every adventure even more special. As she shared in an interview:

“I like how much attention he pays to the details of the world when we’re hiking. He looks at things so closely, wants to smell and understand everything.”

She also shared that many people get used to their daily routines and stop noticing the little things around them. But Casper is different. His curiosity and excitement help him enjoy every moment. Juliet explained:

“He makes me slow down and notice everything more, from autumn leaves to crickets in the grass, and all the birds in the trees.”

She also shared that many people get caught up in their daily routines and forget to enjoy what’s around them. But Casper is different. His curiosity and excitement help him appreciate every little moment. Juliet explained:

Juliet has learned so much about her fluffy feline friend through their hiking adventures. These trips are not only a great way for them to spend time together, but also help her understand what Casper likes and dislikes.

“For example, he seems more comfortable in places like heathland or woodland where there’s lots of shelter and I guess it feels a bit more enclosed and safe. Unlike a dog, he doesn’t usually want to be in an empty open space like a field. He also loves craggy places where he can jump around on the rocks.”

She also shared a funny story from one of their recent adventures. Casper discovered a small cave and was determined to explore it.

Of course, Juliet had to join him. She crawled inside the cave with her little feline explorer. She’s truly a wonderful cat mom!

It’s important to remember that Casper always wears a leash when he goes outdoors with Juliet. Luckily, Juliet had an easier time with this because he was already somewhat used to wearing a harness and leash.

As she shared:

“When we adopted him we began by getting him to wear his new harness in the house to make sure he was comfortable with the feeling. We gave him treats each time he was wearing it so he had the positive association. Now, we have a particular type of treat that he really likes, and he only gets this when wearing the harness.”

Juliet also shared that Casper always uses an extendable lead, which gives him plenty of space to walk around and explore safely.

If Casper’s story has inspired you to try outdoor adventures with your own cat, Juliet has some helpful tips to get started.

First, take it slow. Let your cat get comfortable wearing a leash inside the house before taking them outside. It can also help to save a special treat just for leash time, giving your cat something exciting to look forward to.

For more freedom while exploring, an extendable lead can be a great option. It allows your cat to move around while still staying safe.

Just remember, walking a cat is very different from walking a dog. Cats have their own personalities and preferences, so every adventure will be a little different.
